The pinnacle of French haute joaillerie: Van Cleef & Arpels' patented 1933 Mystery Set, custom-grooved pavilion stones, and gold lattice frameworks.
Patented by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1933 as the Serti Mystérieux, invisible setting presents gemstones as an unbroken carpet of color with zero visible prongs or bezels.
1. Engineering the Mystery Set
- T-Shaped Gold Tracks: A delicate underlying lattice of 18K gold or platinum rails with inverted T-shaped cross-sections is constructed by hand.
- Pavilion Grooving: Lapidaries grind horizontal notches into the pavilion facets of each gemstone just beneath the girdle.
- Slide-Lock Assembly: Gemstones are slipped one by one onto the T-tracks from underneath, locking permanently into place without adhesive.
